JORDAN & TELISA SCHUMACHER - HERMANA HOUSE

A cosy conversation led to the curation of a boutique with a focus on sustainable fashion - and a commitment that has Jordan and Telisa Schumacher working harder than ever before.

Tell us a little bit about Hermana House.

Hermana is a small women's clothing store based in Orange. We love fun, authentic and purposeful fashion. Hermana is dedicated to showcasing a curated range of clothing, accessories, and jewellery. The range of Australian and international brands encapsulate our values of quality, connection and ethical production.

How did Hermana House come about and how did you come up with the name?

The idea for Hermana came about quite organically. Little did we know, we had both been individually thinking about opening a boutique. One afternoon - over a glass of wine - the conversation started flowing and we shared our ideas and visions with each other. We decided to take the plunge and haven’t looked back since.

‘Hermana’ translates to ‘sister’ in Spanish and our childhood home was in a street named ‘Amana’, so Hermana House just seemed so fitting to represent our sisterhood with each other and the women around us. Our conversation finally crystallised into the launch of Hermana House in a pop-up location on the 15th of August, 2022.

What have you enjoyed most about starting your own business?

Jordyn: Our beautiful customers – Hermana would not be here without them. I love assisting them to find the perfect addition to their wardrobe that makes them feel authentically themselves. And of course the growth that has come from the highs and lows with starting a new business.

Telisa: Seeing the growth from where we started to where we are now is pretty great to reflect upon. We still have a long way to go and a lot of goals to kick but I love consistently learning and evolving both personally and professionally.

What’s the best piece of business advice that you have ever received?

Jordyn: Follow your instincts and intuition. If it feels off, more than likely it's rotten.

Telisa: Your business isn’t going to be for everyone, and that’s OK. But your business is going to be for a lot of people and that’s who you keep showing up for.

What makes Hermana House unique?

We want to encourage people to create a timeless wardrobe consisting of quality products that you will love for years to come. By elevating your wardrobe consciously with staples that can be worn time and time again and can be mixed and matched with your existing garments, you assist in reducing the impact that fashion has on landfill. We do our research into each brand to ensure each piece is sourced from quality materials.

What advice would you give another woman who’s looking to start her own business?

Jordyn: Get it girl! Don’t let the fear of starting your own business limit your vision. There is a great need for trust in yourself, your timing, your vision, and the journey. Your work is never done so remember to be kind to yourself and don’t forget to enjoy the little things in life!

Telisa: Prepare to work harder than you ever have before. Do your research and always remember why you pursued your passion. You are your best asset, so be true to yourself and have fun with it. You’ve got this!

What has been your most memorable experience as a small business owner?

Jordyn: I would have to say my most memorable experience thus far, has been opening Hermana with Telisa. She is my best friend, the person I have known my whole life, and when you have known someone for so long you kind of think you have seen them in every light. Alongside sister and best friend, is now a business partner and a new light – She is such a powerhouse who shines so bright.

Telisa: Our first day of trading was my most memorable experience, it was surreal to see all our hard work finally coming to fruition and share it with the community. We were so nervous, but the day was such a success. Coincidentally, we opened on my 26th birthday and it was so special to celebrate such a massive milestone surrounded by loved ones.

What’s on the horizon for Hermana House in 2023?

We have some big moves for 2023, some we aren’t ready to share just yet so keep an eye out. We are continually working on developing brand awareness, trust and relationships with our community. This year we would love to see the business evolve to a place where we can offer a wider variety of sizing along with expanding our range of brands and products.
